Do girls have wet dreams?

Yup! People of all genders—including girls!—have wet dreams. For those who don’t know, a wet dream is when someone has an orgasm (or comes/cums) when they’re asleep. They’re also called nocturnal emissions or sleep orgasms.

An orgasm is often considered the peak of sexual pleasure. For people with penises, orgasms usually happen at the same time as ejaculation (when semen is pushed out of the head of the penis). Because people with vaginas ejaculate (or squirt) less often than people with penises, it might not always be as obvious that they’ve had a wet dream. Instead, they may notice that their vaginas become lubricated (or wet or slippery).

Here are some other things you should know about wet dreams.

  • Wet dreams are completely normal, especially during puberty. Some people have them all the time, some people have them occasionally, and some people never have them! This is all normal and ok.
  • Wet dreams can be caused by an actual dream that you find sexy or that turns you on. Other times, they may be caused by the friction of the sheets as you toss and turn, or something else entirely.
  • You can’t control wet dreams. However, some people notice that they have wet dreams less frequently if or when they masturbate (touch themselves for sexual pleasure) or have partnered sex.
  • You might wake up during or immediately after a wet dream. Or, you might sleep right through it!

Again, wet dreams are a completely normal part of getting older! There’s no reason to feel embarrassed about them.
